Go for a HOORAY Journey

For leaders aspiring to advance their own leadership or elevate their teams, or for HR and people development professionals seeking tailored coaching services, the HOORAY journey offers a strategic framework:

H – Heightening Self-Awareness:
At the heart of the HOORAY journey lies the pivotal step of heightening self-awareness. Leaders delve into a profound exploration of their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, laying the foundation for intentional leadership. Understanding oneself becomes the catalyst for meaningful change and fostering purposeful leadership.

O – Originating Intrinsic Motivations:
Moving beyond self-awareness, the journey progresses into exploring intrinsic motivations – the internal compass guiding leaders’ actions. Delving into personal purpose, core values, and intrinsic motivations sets the stage for a purpose-driven leadership style. Leaders aligning their actions with deeply held values unlock a sense of direction and fulfillment that propels them and their teams forward.

O – Outlining a Visionary Future:
Forward-thinking leaders embrace a future-back approach, using visionary goals to guide their strategy. By setting ambitious long-term objectives and maintaining a broad perspective, these leaders push beyond their comfort zones. This mindset fosters continuous growth and unlocks latent potential-key elements of effective strategic leadership.

R – Reflecting on Current Reality:
Reflection plays a crucial part in the HOORAY journey, allowing leaders to examine their current situations. They evaluate where they stand in relation to their envisioned futures, breaking through tunnel vision and identifying blind spots. This reflective process widens perspectives, enabling leaders to make strategic choices and create outcomes that align with their vision.

A – Advancing Paths to Objectives:
Identifying paths and strategies to achieve objectives marks a pivotal phase in leadership development. It goes beyond mere planning and action; it involves embracing a growth mindset. This phase underscores the importance of acknowledging both challenges and successes. The journey encourages adaptability to changing circumstances, fostering resilience and remaining open to continuous learning.

Y – Yielding a Fulfilling Leadership:
The culmination of the HOORAY journey is in yielding a fulfilling leadership experience. Celebration becomes integral as leaders acknowledge and rejoice in their achievements. Finding joy in the leadership journey and recognizing personal growth and transformation are essential. The journey is cyclical, maintaining a commitment to personal and sustainable leadership growth, ensuring that the fulfillment experienced is not fleeting but enduring.

With seasoned coaches at the helm, the HOORAY journey offers a continuous and joyous adventure for leaders and teams dedicated to achieving excellence in today’s dynamic organizational landscape.

Heartfelt Goals: The Power of a Personal Vision

Heartfelt Goals: The Power of a Personal Vision

Sometimes, we come across a scenic description or a beautiful landscape photo that deeply captivates us. We tell ourselves, even if we can’t go right away, this is a place we must visit someday! With this thought in mind, our everyday work and life, although routine, become more motivating; because now, all our efforts are turned into momentum, helping us reach that destination sooner. For instance, we might start saving diligently for travel expenses, spend time practicing English, learn about the local culture and attractions, or find like-minded travel companions through information sharing. When faced with an annoying boss, disagreeable colleagues, or overwhelming stress, glancing at that scenic photo pinned next to our computer reminds us that every step we take now is paving the way for that trip, instantly recharging us to overcome present challenges. This is the power of a heartfelt goal.

If our life or career development also had such a compelling picture we genuinely aspire to, it would undoubtedly make our daily work and life feel different. We would have a clearer understanding of the “why” behind every decision and action. This clarity would provide us with direction, motivation, focus, resilience, and joy on our journey towards our goals. This picture is what we call a vision. I often invite clients to depict their “vision.” Most respond that they understand the literal meaning but are unsure about the specifics. Why is having a vision essential? What happens if we don’t outline a vision for the next three to five years of our work or career?

When we are comfortably within our comfort zones, we might not notice much difference. However, in an environment full of uncertainties or at critical decision-making moments, having a vision becomes indispensable. For example, should I quit my job? Should I start my own business? What kind of promotion opportunities should I pursue? Should I get an EMBA? Without a vision as a compass, any choice can feel right or wrong, leading to insecurity and uncertainty that deplete our energy and affect our mood. This contrasts sharply with the journey of moving towards a vision, which is full of direction, motivation, and joy. Having a vision for life and career is like having a beautiful landscape that the heart desires. It provides direction, motivation, and a sense of purpose, helping us navigate life’s complexities with confidence and clarity.

Some may ask, “Can a vision put food on the table?” If we constantly talk about our vision but fail to achieve it, isn’t that just pie in the sky, a daydream? A vision cannot be eaten, but it can make our daily work and life more fulfilling and joyful. If a vision is unrealistic or merely wishful thinking without action, then yes, it is just pie in the sky, a daydream. This isn’t the fault of the vision itself, but rather our own.

So, does this mean we need to depict a vision and then work very hard to achieve it? Isn’t our daily work and life already tough enough? This is where visions become fascinating. If the picture we depict is to meet others’ expectations or what we feel we “should” display, such a vision will indeed feel burdensome and is better off not having. However, when the vision comes from the heart, is a meaningful picture for us, it naturally ignites our hopes, clarifies our direction, and unleashes our intrinsic motivation and potential, leading us on a richer and more fulfilling journey.

Have you thought about this? What does your vision look like?

Start with a Pause: Rediscovering Yourself

Start with a Pause: Rediscovering Yourself

I often have similar conversations with my executive clients.

Client: “I feel the need for a change. I’m considering enrolling in an EMBA program. What do you think?” Me: “How can an EMBA help you achieve your interim goals and reach your destination?” Client: “I don’t know…”

At this point, I usually suggest that the client first outline their career development vision and adopt a strategy of starting with the end in mind, working backward to determine current actions and decisions. Rather than discussing whether to enroll in an EMBA as an isolated decision, it’s more important to broaden the perspective, examine all possible paths between the vision and the current position, and evaluate the feasibility of various options. In this decision-making framework, an EMBA might be one of the choices, but it might not be.

These kinds of conversations are more common with mid- to senior-level executives. New managers are often busy learning how to lead effectively and adapting to their new roles. In contrast, experienced executives who excel at their work, or senior executives who see fewer upward opportunities, are more willing to pause, clarify “Where do I want to go? What do I want?” and then outline a vision.

Answering “What do I want?” is difficult for many because we are not accustomed to thinking about this topic. We unconsciously follow social norms or others’ expectations. Most people seem to succeed this way, and by adhering to universal values, they more easily gain recognition and support from those around them. As a result, we start to rely on others’ approval to define our worth, gradually losing connection with our own needs. Therefore, we are better at answering “What should I do?”

The answer to “What do I want?” comes from within and requires considerable self-awareness and understanding to answer clearly. There are many ways to enhance self-awareness, but fundamentally, it requires building a new habit of shifting focus from others’ expectations to ourselves. Like assembling a puzzle, it takes time and patience to piece together the whole picture. The simplest and most effective way is to press the pause button every day, approach with curiosity, and rediscover yourself through reflection:

  • What do I like? What things or people made me feel happy and fulfilled today? Why?
  • What do I dislike? What things or people quickly drained my energy or even caused negative emotions today? Why?
  • If there were another version of me in a parallel universe, where work and life are in their ideal states, what would that look like? Why?

These answers don’t need to be lengthy or filled with fancy words. Writing down key words for five minutes each day is enough. Over time, the whole picture of the puzzle will clearly and completely emerge. By understanding ourselves, we can more resolutely filter out external influences and live the way we want! I invite everyone to embark on this journey of self-exploration.
